Automakers line up for UK scrapping scheme

The powers-that-be in the United Kingdom have announced a vehicle scrapping plan that would pay motorists 2,000 pounds to turn in a vehicle that’s at least 10 years old in exchange for a new car or truck. In reality, the government is only chipping in half that amount, and the automakers themselves are expected to throw in the other thousand pounds.

There were a number of dissenting opinions coming from the car companies that weren’t sure about the merits of matching the government’s £1,000 figure, but Autocar is reporting that Ford, BMW, Citroen, Hyundai, Nissan, Renault, Toyota and Volvo have all announced their plans to take part in the program. We’d be surprised if the majority of the remaining car manufacturers didn’t join in too.

Despite the fact that these automakers are officially offering their half of the scrapping incentive, individual dealerships will still be able to set their own final price for any specific car.

Mazda delivers Norwegian-spec RX-8 Hydrogen RE

Mazda Hydrogen RX-8 - Click for a high res gallery

The first (of 30) Mazda Hydrogen RX-8 RE made its way to Norway last October, but that vehicle was simply imported from Japan. The first Norwegian-spec RX-8 Hydrogen RE was delivered to the Norwegian government this week. What’s the difference? Well, left-hand-drive for one, and the European model also has a manual transmission.

The car will participate in the official national hydrogen project, HyNor, and will be paraded for the media during the official opening of the refueling stations on May 11. It’s not all government test programs that Mazda’s interested in the northern European country: RX-8 Hydrogen RE leases will start in Norway this summer. More details after the jump.

SAE 2009: Torotrak mechanical flywheel KERS, likely coming to next Jaguar XJ

Adding an electric motor and battery to a vehicle is just one of many ways to create a hybrid. We’ve seen hydraulic hybrids being tested in a variety of commercial vehicle applications. Torotrak has an altogether different mechanical system based on flywheels. The Torotrak system first came to our attention a couple of years ago when the FIA proposed allowing kinetic energy recovery systems on Formula One cars. Subsequently, at least two F1 teams licensed the Torotrak system for use, but none are believed to actually be using it right now. The flywheel system has a number of advantages over electric hybrid systems, including cost, weight and size.

It does have limitations as well. The system has to be mounted in physical proximity of the drive hardware because of the mechanical connections needed. Also clearly it cannot be adapted to plug-in capability. However, Torotrak Technology Director Chris Greenwood told ABG at the SAE World Congress that several UK companies are currently testing the flywheel hybrid system in road-going applications in government-funded research programs. Among those is Jaguar-Land Rover. Continue reading after the jump.
